FOIL Disclosure: NYCHA Residents File Almost 60K Roach/Bedbug Work Orders

The Legal Aid Society today released a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) response revealing that New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents filed over 59,770 work orders to remediate roach and bedbug infestations for the first nine months of 2019 alone, reports the New York Daily News.

Residents of the Grant Houses filed the most work orders – 981 – to remediate roach and bedbug infestations, and 877 of the Grant House orders involved roach complaints. On average, remediation took the Housing Authority roughly 9.5 days to address. The Pomonk Houses had the most complaints for bedbugs – 116 – which took the Housing Authority roughly 9 days to remediate.

“With the legislature now in session, we again call for increased funding for public housing authorities to address these problems and others facing tenants,” said Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of our Civil Law Reform Unit.
