The Access to Benefits Helpline is a ‘one-stop’ resource for New Yorkers in need of legal assistance. We assist individuals with their health law/ Medicaid issues, problems with public assistance/ food stamps, special education and employment/ unemployment benefits matters. We also assist callers interested in sealing their criminal convictions.

The Helpline staff and volunteers are able to provide direct assistance and/or referrals in matters related to employment issues and unemployment insurance benefits, public health insurance, including Medicaid, public assistance, including food stamps, and other health and safety net benefits and education law/special education issues

On the first and third Tuesdays of each month, the Helpline is open for Health Law and Medicaid advice from 9:30 am-12:30 pm.

Areas of Practice
City-wide back-up support to all Legal Aid and Legal Services offices. City-wide litigation and advocacy on behalf of homeless families with children and homeless single adults to obtain emergency housing, public assistance benefits, special grants, and permanent housing relocation.

When to Call
Telephone intake for homeless families with children every Tuesday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Emergencies at all other times.

Immigration Law Unit Helpline: 1-844-955-3425

Areas of Practice
Non-citizen New Yorkers detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Bergen, Monmouth, Hudson and Sussex County Jails in New Jersey and/or their family members, may call for advice and possible legal representation on their cases. Immigrants detained at other immigration detention facilities and in upstate New York prisons and/or their family members can call the hotline for advice only.

When to Call
The hotline operates on Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Collect calls from detention facilities and prisons are accepted.

Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic Helpline: (212) 426-3013

Areas of Practice
The LITC provides free representation and advice to low-income taxpayers who have disputes with the Internal Revenue Service or New York State Department of Taxation & Finance. The LITC can assist you with income tax audits, appeals, court proceedings, or collection matters. Tax issues include earned income credit, child tax credit, filing status, dependency exemptions, innocent spouse relief, employee classification and more. When calling the hotline, please have with you: your current income records, including pay stubs; your Social Security card; any tax bills, letters, or notices from the IRS or the U.S. Tax Court; and your tax return for the year in question.

When to call
Leave a message with your name and a telephone number where you can be reached between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. A trained staff member will return your call as soon as possible.
