Juvenile Rights Challenges Unjust Treatment in OCFA Residential Centers

The Juvenile Rights Practice filed a federal civil rights class action lawsuit against the New York State Office of Children and Family Services charging that children confined in OCFS residential centers are subjected to unconstitutional and excessive force by members of the staff and are deprived of legally-required mental health services. The Court of Appeals ruled that the City must notify The Legal Aid Society before evicting a homeless individual from a City shelter for adults so that Legal Aid Society lawyers can protect the rights of homeless women and men, including many who have disabilities.
