Our First Criminal Branch Launches

The Legal Aid Society opened its first true Criminal Branch, merged with the Voluntary Defender Committee, and appointed a woman, Margaret May Burnett, to head the operation. Ms. Burnett was described by the press as an unconventional woman with a zeal for defending low-income New Yorkers.
