Statement on Reports of Trump Administration Working to Roll Back Civil Rights and Other Protections for Transgender People

The Legal Aid Society issued the following statement following reports that the Trump Administration is working to roll back critical protections for transgender Americans:

“The Trump Administration’s latest attempt to roll back crucial civil rights protections for transgender and non-binary individuals and to eviscerate enforcement of anti-discrimination laws is unconscionable. Transgender and non-binary people are our family members, our staff, our clients, and are an invaluable part of our Legal Aid community. Our Constitution affords a wide range of protections that no administration can unilaterally abolish. This attack is shameful, unlawful, and simply inhumane. We know many are frightened right now to see their identity threatened with such callousness and malevolence; but New Yorkers must know that The Legal Aid Society stands with trans and non-binary communities, and that we will fight to keep this draconian proposal from becoming law. The fight for transgender and non-binary rights is a fight for human rights.”
