The Rules Have Not Changed for People In the U.S.
(NEW YORK, NY) – The Legal Aid Society released the following statement today following recent news reports with incorrect information about proposed new rules for individuals receiving public benefits:
“The rules for public charge have NOT changed.
People with Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR or ‘green card’) status are not facing a new risk of deportation or removal if they use public benefits.
There is a proposal to change the rules, but it is just a proposal; and the soonest the rules could change would be March, 2019. The proposed rules mostly affect people who are applying to get their green card through a family member, not people who already have their green card.
Anyone seeking additional information on this matter should contact our Immigration Helpline at 1-844-955-3425, Monday – Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM or visit our public charge website.”
