Legal Aid Statement On Scotus Decision Of Masterpiece Cakeshop V. Colorado Civil Rights Commission

The Legal Aid Society issued the following statement today responding to the United States Supreme Court’s decision on Masterpiece Cakeshop V. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:

“The Society holds the firm belief that all individuals’ civil rights must be protected under law. In its decision today in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, the United States Supreme Court affirmed the rights of the gay community while holding that the baker involved had the right to express his religious and First Amendment rights before Colorado’s Commission on Human Rights. Today’s decision has no impact on the validity or strength of New York State’s and New York City’s Human Rights Laws. Our clients’ individual civil rights continue to be protected under the State’s and City’s strongly defined laws; and we will continue to fight in court every day against any violations of their rights.”
