(NEW YORK, NY) – Tina Luongo, Attorney-In-Charge of the Criminal Defense Practice at The Legal Aid Society, issued the following statement today on a lawsuit filed in Federal court by Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP to restore Constitutional rights for New Yorkers detained at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn:

“It’s unconscionable that New Yorkers at MDC Brooklyn have been deprived of basic necessitates including medical care and working electricity and heat – especially through some of the coldest days on record in New York City. These conditions, and also the falsehoods spread by jail officials in an attempt to cover up this crisis, warrant immediate action. It’s imperative that the Constitutional rights of these individuals including access to counsel be must restored immediately. We fully support this litigation, and we urge the Court to grant Plaintiff’s motion.”
