As Imminent Eviction Crisis Looms, LAS Calls on Albany to Protect New Yorkers

With less than ten days until New York State’s eviction moratorium expires, The Legal Aid Society called on New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousin, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to act immediately to prevent an unprecedented wave of evictions and homelessness, reports the Associated Press.

Legal Aid has repeatedly urged Governor Andrew Cuomo to use his powers and authority to extend the eviction moratorium indefinitely and outright, and has also called on New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie

“Between the 200,000 pending housing court cases and the 14,000 households with an active eviction warrant, allowing the moratorium to expire and these cases to proceed would be nothing short of catastrophic,” said Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society.
