LAS On How to Handle a Landlord Threatening Eviction

Legal Aid Society attorney Ellen Davidson appears in a new piece on Buzzfeed aimed at educating renters about their legal options for fighting landlord eviction suits in an age of economic insecurity wrought by the COVID-19 shutdown. As the clock on eviction moratoriums continues to tick down across the country, recent studies have estimated that 19 to 23 million renters are at risk of eviction by September 30th. Already vulnerable due to the financial straits generated by the global pandemic, many Americans – particularly Black and Latinx people – now face tremendous challenges simply in order to remain in their homes and off of the streets.

As government continues working to pass relief bills at both the state and national level, The Legal Aid Society and other public defenders have strenuously advocated for increases in relief funds to battle the tsunami of eviction proceedings now working their way through the courts. New York City alone faces what housing advocates warn could amount to a $400 million a month housing shortfall once current relief funds expire.
