LAS Analysis: COVID-19 Continues to Spread Rapidly at City Jails

A new report from The Legal Aid Society indicates that New York City jails have become the epicenter of COVID-19. The rate of infection in city jails as of Wednesday was more than seven times the rate of infection in New York City overall, reports the New York Daily News.

The Legal Aid Society and other defender organizations have in recent days called for vulnerable inmates to be released en mass, in an effort to stem the rate of infection and control the spread of the deadly disease.

“Stop sending people to Rikers and let these New Yorkers out immediately,” said Tina Luongo, Attorney-in-Charge of the Criminal Defense Practice at The Legal Aid Society, noting that people are still being sent to city jails on new arrests. “Anything else is too little, too late.”
