LAS Argues for Rent Rebates on Behalf of NYCHA Tenants Before NYS Appellate Division

The Legal Aid Society appeared before the New York State Appellate Division, First Department and argued a lawsuit on behalf of NYCHA tenants who went without heat or hot water during the cold spell winter of 2017-2018.

“We are asking to be certified as a class, so that we can bring one lawsuit on behalf of these 300k NYCHA residents and save having to bring multiple individual cases,” said Lucy Newman, a Staff Attorney with The Legal Aid Society, told Fox 5 NY.

“Every single tenant in New York City, whether you live in privately owned apartments or publicly owned apartments, is entitled to live in safe and habitable housing, and that includes having heat and hot water,” she continued.
