LAS Calls for NYC to House Homeless in Hotels During Outbreak

The outbreak of COVID-19 has driven New York City’s homeless population into the subway system, leading to dangerously unsanitary conditions that may contribute to the spread of the virus.

The development has lead to calls from The Legal Aid Society to provide hotel rooms as a means of controlling the rate of infection, as reported by PIX 11.

“Right now we have 100,000 empty hotel rooms,” said Josh Goldfein, a staff attorney with LAS. “The city has not made available enough bathrooms or showers for people to take care of their daily hygiene. Also, there’s not enough food for people to eat, so they’re starting to get desperate in terms of finding places to go where they can take care of their basic needs.”
