LAS Urges Albany to Defend New Yorkers Disproportionately Impacted by COVID-19

The Legal Aid Society and New York State Senators Brad Hoylman, Jessica Ramos and Jamaal Bailey, held a press conference to call on Governor Andrew Cuomo, State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to immediately enact key legislative measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic’s disproportionate impact on Legal Aid clients, New Yorkers who overwhelmingly come from communities of color, reports Patch.

Many items on the legislative agenda desperately needed reform before the pandemic, now stand at the forefront of this crisis. COVID-19 has caused a public health and economic crisis that has grossly exacerbated underlying injustice for New Yorkers in housing, consumer protection, privacy, immigration, and juvenile and criminal justice.
