NYC Braces for Increase in Homeless Population Once State Eviction Freeze Expires

The Legal Aid Society and other housing advocates warned that New York’s homeless population would skyrocket should Albany allow the statewide eviction freeze to lapse in early July, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Just this past week, the Federal Government enacted an eviction moratorium but many renters in New York State would not benefit because the regulation does extend relief to tenants in unregulated apartments where the landlord can avoid the moratorium by bringing a case based on non-renewal of the tenant’s lease.

“Even in the best-case scenario, where this is upheld, there are enough loopholes in it that in New York City we would still be looking at a significant number of evictions happening,” said Josh Goldfein, Staff Attorney with The Legal Aid Society’s Homeless Rights Project.
